Kemal Atatürk, the Founder of the Modern Secular Republic of Turkey, made the pronouncement, “The press is a nation’s shared voice. It is an innovator, a school, and a power in itself.” The Turkish-American community joins other peace loving people around the world in expressing revulsion at the senseless attack by a Fundamentalist Islamic group against the employees of Charlie Hebdo Magazine in France. We recognize this attack as pure barbarism, a despicable and cowardly act of terrorism against humanity, and one that must be vigorously condemned by all civilized people. In expressing our deepest sympathies to the survivors of the twelve victims… murdered execution style, the Atatürk Society of America (ASA) calls for universal promotion of freedom of speech, freedom of artistic expression, and freedom of the press.
